South Africa’s telematics market has matured significantly, with a high penetration rate from an international perspective. According to the Research and Markets 7th Edition of Fleet Management in South Africa report, the number of fleet management systems active in the country is expected to reach 3.8 million by 2028.
Fleet management in South Africa has faced numerous challenges, including increasing vehicle theft and hijacking, fuel theft and fraud, inadequate infrastructure, and new regulatory policies. However, technological innovation and growing competition have driven major advancements in the industry.
Over the past 30 years, the integration of advanced telematics and data analytics has transformed fleet management. This technological progress has brought about real-time tracking, predictive maintenance, route optimisation, and comprehensive fleet management solutions. These advancements have empowered fleet operators to monitor vehicle performance, driver behaviour, and fuel consumption more effectively, leading to significant improvements in operational efficiency, cost savings, and overall fleet safety. Big data and IoT have shifted fleet management from a reactive to a proactive discipline, enabling smarter decision-making and enhanced productivity.
Netstar, a prominent industry player, has been at the forefront of integrating AI, IoT, and data analytics into its service offerings to maintain market leadership and navigate economic uncertainties. The launch of Africa’s largest real-time telematics fleet bureau in April 2024 underscores the company’s commitment to innovation. The Global Fleet Bureau enhances driver and vehicle safety, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance through AI camera solutions, real-time monitoring, and advanced machine learning technologies.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary this month, Netstar exemplifies how the industry has evolved. Grant Fraser, Netstar’s Group Managing Director, highlights the transformative impact of data analytics on fleet management. “By harnessing big data, we can offer actionable insights that enable companies to improve driver behaviour, predict maintenance needs, and reduce downtime. These data-driven decisions are crucial for maintaining efficient operations and ensuring fleets run smoothly. The ability to foresee potential issues and address them proactively is a game-changer for the industry,” says Fraser.
He adds, “Cloud-based data analysis and machine learning sift through the massive amount of data collected (180 billion IoT messages monthly), allowing our agents to differentiate between false alarms and genuine emergencies. This translates to an impressive recovery rate north of 90%, with over R1,4 billion worth of assets recovered in the last year alone. These recoveries are achieved through a combination of real-time tracking (covering over 100 million kilometres daily) and dedicated ground teams and helicopters that covered a staggering 360,000 kilometres and 2,000 hours of flight time in FY24. Additionally, the system analyses over 170,000 hours of video content monthly, providing invaluable insights for recovery efforts.”
Netstar continues solidifying its position as a leading telematics service. It is scaling into new markets and products through partnerships and integrations, including new OEMs such as Kinto and UD Trucks. Partnerships with Toyota have driven further expansion into Southeast Asia, and the collaboration with Here Technologies has been extended into the Asia-Pacific territories. Netstar has also developed the industry’s first fleet co-pilot with Microsoft.
The company’s commitment to innovation is evidenced by the launch of five new products and recognition through several TT100 awards, including the Enterprise Winner Innovation Award and the Department of Science and Technology Minister Award for Overall Excellence.
In today’s competitive economic climate, transport companies must optimise delivery routes and minimise fuel consumption. Telematics systems’ real-time data and insights enable transport companies to streamline operations, reduce fuel costs, and ultimately enhance profitability. This technology has proven invaluable in helping businesses remain competitive while managing their fleets more effectively. The future of telematics in South Africa looks promising, with Netstar leading the charge towards a simpler, safer, and smarter tomorrow.
