BEYOND POLICY AND PAYROLL: GUIDING HUMAN CAPITAL IN THE INDUSTRIAL EQUIPMENT SECTOR

Nothing is too much effort for Elizabeth Kinchin, Human Capital Administrator for Toyota Material Handling’s Cape Town branch.

Having clocked up a decade and a half’s worth of experience in the Human Capital operational space, she has grown in confidence and resilience over the years. “My role goes far beyond policies and payroll. I see myself as a bridge between management and employees, ensuring well-being, rolling out policies with clarity and solving problems before they grow.”

“Every day, I focus on building relationships and fostering trust, so our team doesn’t just meet deadlines, we deliver excellence together. Our door is always open to assist employees whenever they require support, reinforcing a culture of accessibility and care,” she adds.

She believes human connection is critical. “This is what makes the role impactful: it’s about keeping processes smooth while ensuring employees feel valued and supported at all times, as they are our biggest asset.”

Key to her success is working with an integrated team, aligning management, employees and policies to meet critical goals while fostering a culture of well-being and excellence.

“It’s not about individual wins, but about collective success, proving that collaboration and commitment drive lasting impact. It is amazing what impact a team can make when they bring passion and determination to their work,” she notes.

The job is not without its challenges, including meeting tight deadlines, adapting quickly to new systems, balancing multiple competing priorities, navigating difficult conversations with employees, and finding the best solution for all concerned.

“Each obstacle requires thoughtful problem-solving and a commitment to finding the best solutions. By approaching these challenges with adaptability, empathy and collaboration, we not only overcome them but strengthen our team’s ability to deliver excellence under pressure,” she explains.

She loves CFAO Equipment’s culture of recognition and growth most. “CFAO Equipment values contributions and creates opportunities for women to thrive, which makes me proud to be part of this journey.”

Knowing that her work truly makes a difference is what motivates her every day – whether it’s solving problems, supporting colleagues or contributing to the success of the Cape Town branch and the company.

Equally important is the leadership she works with and a management team that is consistently supportive in all aspects. “A sense of purpose, combined with a culture of trust, teamwork, and collaboration, is what gets me out of bed every morning, ready to deliver excellence.”

She concludes with some words of advice to women working in a largely male-dominated industry: Never underestimate yourself. Speak with confidence, keep learning and build strong networks. Remember, resilience and determination are your greatest strengths, and your voice matters in shaping the future of this industry.”
