SOUTH AFRICA’S WATER CHALLENGES ARE CHANGING HOW HOUSEHOLDS THINK ABOUT SAFE DRINKING WATER
For many South Africans, turning on a tap can no longer be treated as a guarantee that water will be available when it is needed.
Recent planned maintenance across Gauteng, continued pressure on municipal distribution networks and water treatment challenges in Nelson Mandela Bay have once again highlighted the vulnerability of the systems that supply homes, schools and businesses.
Rand Water’s maintenance programme, conducted between 29 May and 17 July, involved critical work on electrical and pumping infrastructure at the Palmiet and Zuikerbosch systems. The programme affected parts of Gauteng, the North West, Free State and Mpumalanga, with some communities experiencing reduced water pressure or interrupted supply while the work was under way. Rand Water said the maintenance was necessary to improve system reliability, increase standby capacity and reduce the risk of equipment failures.
In Nelson Mandela Bay, the challenge has extended beyond water availability to the ability of treatment facilities to process and distribute water consistently. In May, the municipality reported that high turbidity levels at the Nooitgedagt Water Treatment Works were affecting its capacity to adequately treat and distribute water. Further supply interruptions were recorded in June as the municipality continued to manage turbidity, depleted reservoirs, treatment chemical requirements and operational challenges at several facilities.
More recently, Nelson Mandela Bay has also faced renewed scrutiny over sewage pollution, with the municipality reportedly under criminal investigation as part of a broader national response to the pollution of South Africa’s water resources.
These are different challenges, but together they point to a common reality: South Africa’s water conversation can no longer focus only on whether the country has sufficient water resources. It must also consider whether water can be treated, transported and delivered reliably through ageing and heavily constrained infrastructure.
“Planned maintenance is essential because water systems cannot remain reliable without investment and regular upgrades. However, recurring interruptions and growing concerns about treatment capacity are also prompting households and businesses to think more carefully about how they access and manage drinking water,” says Murray Crow, Managing Director of Kwikot.
Water purification, safe storage and responsible water use each play a different role in building greater resilience.
Purification can help address specific water quality concerns when the correct technology is selected and maintained appropriately. Safe storage can provide a temporary buffer during planned interruptions, while water dispensers can make bottled drinking water easier to store, cool, heat and access in homes and workplaces.
These solutions should not be viewed as substitutes for dependable municipal infrastructure or official water quality monitoring. They are practical household measures that can help people prepare for interruptions and manage their drinking water more conveniently while municipalities undertake necessary maintenance and recovery work.
Recognising this changing need, Kwikot has expanded its household water offering with the launch of its Kwikpure water dispenser range, which includes top-loading and bottom-loading models for homes and offices. The range has been developed to provide convenient access to bottled drinking water in different household and workplace environments.
“The launch is part of our broader focus on helping South Africans manage water more effectively in their daily lives,” says Crow.
“A water dispenser does not solve the country’s infrastructure challenges and it should not be confused with a municipal-scale treatment solution. Its role is much more practical: it provides a convenient way for households and businesses to store and dispense bottled drinking water, particularly when people are planning around maintenance, supply interruptions or the everyday need for accessible hot and cold water.”
The heightened focus on household water preparedness also creates a need for greater consumer awareness. Water that is stored incorrectly can become contaminated, while purification equipment and filters that are not maintained according to the manufacturer’s instructions may become less effective over time.
Consumers should use food-grade containers, keep stored water sealed and away from chemicals or direct sunlight and clean reusable containers thoroughly. Where a water quality warning has been issued, residents should follow the guidance of their municipality or the relevant health authorities rather than relying on assumptions about whether the water is safe to consume.
Households should also avoid storing excessive quantities of municipal water ahead of planned maintenance. Sudden spikes in demand can place additional pressure on reservoirs and make it more difficult for systems to recover after pumping resumes.
“Preparation should be proportionate and responsible. The objective is not to encourage panic buying or unnecessary water storage, but to help households understand the different options available to them and make informed decisions based on their circumstances,” says Crow.
South Africa’s immediate priority must remain the maintenance, modernisation and effective management of municipal water infrastructure. At the same time, the experiences of communities in Gauteng and Nelson Mandela Bay demonstrate why water resilience must also be considered at household and business level.
Reliable access to drinking water is no longer only an infrastructure issue. It is increasingly part of how South Africans plan their homes, workplaces and daily routines.
